You have made a labelling mistake (or two), the Great Explosion 2nd April 1916 took place at Uplees not Oare and it was not at a Gunpowder works. 'The Powder' as it was known locally was called The Cotton Powder Company and was set up to make Cotton Powder, this is Gun-Cotton (a high explosive) rather than Gunpowder (a low explosive); over time the company expanded it's site to manufacture Cordite, Nitroglycerine and Detonators. The Explosives Loading Company was built beside the CPC to manufacture Mines and Shells and the (first) explosion took place at their building numbered 833. I hope this helps. Nigel Hills
